What religion means to me… Religion almost means nothing to me. I do not believe in any organized religion and I am not going to sit here and desecrate others views and opinions. When I was 10 years old, I told my parents I know longer wanted to go to church. At that time, my parents were taking me to a Baptist Church where my dad later became a deacon. I told them that I didn’t believe. The reason for this is most likely because when I was younger my parents divorced and remarried. I was then torn in-between two families with different religion views. My mother and step-father, who I consider my father, are Baptist and my biological father and step-mother are Jehovah Witnesses. At that young age, I was kicked out of the Kingdom Hall and not accepted by most of the biological father’s family. This is why I didn’t understand religion at a young age. I thought everyone was accepted to any church if they wanted to go. Now I still do not believe in most religions. I feel that organized religion is a way people stay in contact and a part of a community. I also feel that people back in the day had nothing better to do than go to church, they didn’t have television or the internet, so what else were they suppose to do? Hanging out at church sounds like a good idea, and then the church goes had to think of a reason why they were there other than simply hanging out, so that’s why the God thing came around. Church goers went to praise god and pray for themselves and other people they hung out with. It all sounds like a crock of --- to me.
Anyways, if I were made to choose a religion by the force of god, lol, or a gun, I would probably choose Hinduism, mainly Buddhism. I have been to a Buddhist temple and have talked to some monks, and really enjoy their views on recantation and they are in touch with nature and science. I am a science kinda person, so I really feel like science is my religion. I think that science explains the world more logically to me than any scripture. I don’t feel a connection to the church, but I do feel a connection with theories on how the Earth works. The natural functions of the Earth are visible today, God is not. I would totally believe in a god if they were a tangible person or object and actually did all the things that they are said to do. But I need the proof. I guess that is where the science falls into play. I need the proof that god exists and helps people and things out. I also think you can have faith and not believe. Faith is a matter of trust and reliance. I have faith in science, but I do not believe in god.

Global Warming, Essay Topic 3

Global warming has been a great debate since the people realized the world's climate is rising in the 1800s. Many scientists have different opinions on whether global warming is caused by human activities or if it is naturally created by the Earth. This debate is the main reason I switched my major 3 years ago. I believe that global warming is natural and has been a part of the Earth’s climate since the creation of the Earth. The rock record shows that there have been climatic fluctuations thousands of times in the Earth’s temperatures and amount of different elements. Since the last ice age during the Pleistocene, the Earth’s climate has been rising slowly. This can be due to numerous reasons. The definition of global warming is the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. Human created, or anthropogenic, causes include: burning of fossil fuels, extracting fossil fuels, population, and human waste. Earth created causes include: astronomical causes, atmospheric causes and tectonic causes. Astronomical causes are considered to be from the different year cycles causing the axial tilting of the Earth to change, the orbit around the sun to change, and different amounts of solar input due to the cycles. The atmospheric causes come from albedo, solar reflectivity of clouds and snow and ice, and heat retention due to the amounts of gases in the atmosphere. The tectonic main causes are the movement of landmasses and the explosion of volcanoes distributing green house gases into the atmosphere. Both anthropogenic and natural causes of global warming both suggest that the Earth is warming, but the media portrays to the common people a biased view that global warming is caused by humans. The media doesn’t really portray the other side, the natural causing side maybe because they are ignorant or are trying to sell “green products.” It’s a good idea for humans to cut back on their additions to the warming, but the warming may be so insignificant that we are wasting our time in trying to limit and use green products. It may just be a marketing scheme to add to our economy. I guess until further research is done, it’s is up to you to decide if we cause global warming or if the Earth does-but that is getting off topic of my essay. I’m just defining global warming and the potential causes, not including whether they are right or wrong.

Basic Requirements
I am almost finished with my undergraduate college career. I have been looking forward to this for the past four years. I started my college career in the parks and rec department, because I had worked in my home town parks and rec for previous 5 years and said, “What the hell, why not?” I was taking some of my basic studies requirement classes and took Introduction to Environment Science with Dr. Jack Hall. That class made me consider an EVS degree and I wanted to further that by doing the 3-2 program with NC State doing environmental engineering. I switched my advisor to Dr. Hall and started taking the engineering classes and realized I wasn’t into the math and physics necessary. This is when I started to concentrate on just the environmental science degree. I then took EVS 205, a class solely based on global warming and how it’s considered to be all human created. I was really put off by this class. All we did was read books and news paper articles on how global warming is human made and not made by the Earth. This is when I went to my advisor now, Dr. David Blake, and started my geology career. He planned out the rest of my college career with all the necessary geology courses I needed for my degree. I was so thankful to be in a group of people and scientist who had similar beliefs about the world we live in, other than those crazy EVS people. I also found out the Dr. Hall has his Ph D in Geology and recently moved out of the geology department to be the head of the EVS department. I still think he is great professor, but maybe slightly different views from my own and the geology department. I am so thankful that I have found geology as my major. It has truly opened my eyes to the world around us and the universe we live in. I am a science based thinker, I guess analytical thinker and this degree fits me like hand-in-glove. There have been so many experiences out in the field that has enlightened me in to how things are created, from simple atoms to mountains. I can almost predict where everything around us started from and where it will end up. The only problem I face now is what I am going to study in graduate school. There are so many disciplines in geology that I could study. I enjoy sedimentary rocks, crystalline rocks, and metamorphics. I know I really don’t like ground water movement (where most of the jobs are) and I don’t like soils too much. I like the hard rock varieties. I guess I am going to have to figure it out and soon. I graduate December 12, 2009 and apply for graduate school soon. But before I get stressed about trying to figure out what I am going to study, I need take the GREs and fill out some applications, and finally, get accepted.

My fall break...

My fall break was not the best. I spent it watching my two little sisters and taking them to school because I lost my best cousin.
Last week, I spent most of it at New Hanover Hospital. My cousin, Chad Nifong, was in the ICU. He walked into the hospital in Southport Monday of last week and by Tuesday night he was on a ventilator, had 16 drip-bags, constant blood being added, and constant dialysis. His liver and kidneys had failed and there was a fluid sac around his heart with blood clots in it. The doctors at New Hanover, ran every test imaginable to try to figure out what was wrong with him. But the doctors were stumped and called Duke Medical Center to see if they would take him. The Duke Life Touch helicopter picked Chad up on Friday and took him to Duke. Saturday night, I received the news that Chad had passed away. The doctors were still unable to figure out the cause of his organs shutting down and the reason for the fluid sac. Chad will be greatly missed by all the people he touched. You can read comments “memorables” from people have recently commented on his obituary below.

Surviving are his parents; one stepson, Sean Loftis; two brothers, Greg Nifong (Peggy), and Grant Nifong; one sister, Angie Jenkins (Sam); uncles Mickey and Van Eddinger (Deanna); several nieces and nephews; many great aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 6, at Griffith Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tony Brown officiating. Chad was not only a great friend but also family. We had many fun times together over the years- from boating, fishing, partying and motorcycles to him chasing us with snakes with snakes when we were kids. and he will be greatly missed. He was truly a family man and loved by everyone who met him. He will be greatly missed. His love for children was immeasurable and will never be forgotten.

I know you will be watching the fireworks from Heaven this year with us and when we look up we will never forget the look on your face everytime you lit a spectacular firework for the kids. We never forget the years of fun and your love will never be forgotten. God Bless you and your family.

My heart is breaking. Chad came to work for Yaupon Beach when he was a kid. We watched him grow up and felt all of his high moments in life as well as his disappointments. He was so sweet and would flash those beautiful blue gleaming eyes at everyone, especially when he was happy. Chad was loved by all of his friends. We will miss him terribly. My prayers are with his entire family. I know Chad will be happy from now on and will be the best Angel ever.

I worked with Chad when he came to work with us at Yaupon Beach. He automatically became one of our Yaupon family and he will always be a part of our Oak Island family.. Just this year, he took my daughter on a bike ride during the Spring Bike Run at Boiling Spring Lakes. It was her second bike ride ever. Chad was a nice guy and he would do anything that he could for you. I will surely miss him. God Bless.

To Chad's family, My family and I are quite simply heartbroken at the loss of Chad, but more so at the thought of what all of you must be feeling. He was an amazing dad to Sean, one of the kindest of men, and just a really good and true friend to all. To say he will be missed is one of the biggest understatements. He will never be forgotten and we are so thankful for having known him.

Words cannot express the sadness I feel about loosing my friend. Chad came in Russell's Place several times a week, so I know it's just not going to be the same. He knew everybody and everybody knew him. He'd always sit at the counter, so all of us girls got to know him really well. To Chads Family, Please know, that our hearts and prayers are with all of you. And to Chad, We love you and we're gonna miss you Buddy.

We are going to miss the trips at the beach. No one could light up the fireworks like you did. You really put on a show the last 10-15 years.

God Bless.

How do you put into words all of the emotions that you feel when you lose someone? Words are inadequate, tears are bountiful, and the sorrow is vast. I will laugh through the tears as I remember all of the good times we had, and I will treasure those moments always.

I just learned of Chad's passing. I did not know him personally but am close friends with Grant. From the other postings I am reading here it seems he was like Grant, kind with a big heart. I'm sure he is looking down on all his family and friends now with a smile on his face. My condolences to the family and all his friends.

Doctor Visit
Yesterday, I went to the doctor for a check up to make sure the baby and I are doing fine and on course. The appointment wasn't so exciting since the doctor came in and was like "Okay, we are going to listen to the baby's heart beat,... okay any problems?" and that was it. He did fill out a referral to the dentist because my bottom wisdom teeth are coming in and they are impacted and probably at this point infected and also painful. So now I have to make another appointment with a dentist to make sure my mouth is okay. I also got a flu shot. I have been getting the flu shot for 12 years now and it has worked wonders for me. There has been some debate in the media with the effectiveness of the shot, but I have yet to get a severe flu in the past 12 years. I have stay pretty healthy other than having respiratory problems.
I also asked the doctor if he would schedule another sonogram, since we were unable to see the sex of the baby, which everyone wants to know, including myself. Of course I didn’t say that directly to the doctor since they do not schedule sonograms for the mere fact of the sex of the baby. The reasoning for another one was because of the position of the baby was not the best, and the all measurements were not completed. But the doctor came back with “There is enough information here.” I was very displeased, because he also mentioned that the radiologist or whomever reads the sonogram also had made a note that there wasn’t efficient amount of data. I hope the next doctor’s appointment will be a “nicer” doctor that will schedule one, and if not my horse is going to accidently “bump” me over. I just want to know if I am having a boy or a girl so my FiancĂ© and I can decide on a name and go out and buy stuff for the baby. We have decided on a girl’s name: Sophia Estelle Gough. Very Italiany, I know but Dan’s, my fiancĂ©, family is 3rd generation Italian on one side and 3rd generation Irish on the other, and by 3rd generation I mean his great grandparents came off the boat at Elis Island.
Well until the next appointment, everything seems to be going well.

Gripes on Campus

Why don't we have a football team?????
This question has probably been a really big one for most football fans, especially the ones that go here at UNCW.
The major issue on why we don't have one is because of the cost. In 2007, the estimated cost for bringing a football team with a stadium, coaching staff, equipment, Title IX, and scholarships would be around $70 million. That would double or triple students athletics fees, which would probably not hurt enrollment because of the desire for a team.
My suggestion would be to use Legion Stadium, but the NCAA requires there to be 15000 seats whereas Legion only has 6000.
But UNCC started a grass movement for their football team in 2004 and is aiming to start playing in 2013, but they must raise $5 million upfront before they can start constructing the team and its entirety.
The subject is hard one for debate because of the economy. Many students want a football team and it would probably be great for the Wilmington community, but the facts stay with the money, which students are probably not completely aware of. They just here football and support it without further knowledge. UNCW would also have to knock down even more of the woodlands behind campus to construct such a stadium, plus additional parking-which might solve our terrible parking situation but that's another debate. The woodlands are the largest area in Wilmington city limits of forested land, most of it would probably be demolished in the construction of the stadium and practice fields and parking lots and whatever else would come with a football team. The idea of having a football team sounds good, but once you realize the costs, both money and land area, it seems that it might not be worth it. We do have the beach right? Which most other universities don't have.

Essay topic dos

My first idea for essay dos was to compare the movie Inglourious Basterds with the dark comic Maus by Art Spiegelman. I wanted to compare them because they were both controversial and have the same appeal of Nazi Germany being awful people. But I realized that this comparison would be very time consuming and I was aiming for a great essay not one that would be rushed due to time constraints.
My second idea came to me as I was looking through some evolution vs. creationism comics when I came across the idea of the big bang and the universe. I looked up pictures of the big bang depictions and time relatives and then came to sizes of our galaxy and solar system on the National Geographic webpage. I really wanted to use this image that is an argument of the size and totality of our galaxy. I then remember back to one of the first lectures in my geography class, which had the Galaxy Song by Monty Python, that also depicts the size of the galaxy and the stars that are in it, and thought what a great comparison of two totally different medias arguing a similar topic. The video is very interesting of the Galaxy Song, but I am just going to compare the lyrics and not the video depiction.
From my stance on the two arguments, as of now, I think the National Geographic is conveying the size more accurately than the Galaxy Song due to it being published in a widely known magazine, having visual argument showing cylinders and grids, and having a big bang progression. The Galaxy Song is slightly fabricated and uses humor to depict a informational theme.
Here is the image form National Geographics.
